After a positive PPD Test, other tests will be done to confirm the diagnosis of TB and to determine whether the infection is latent or active. There are a number of sputum cultures than can be done to positively identify the presence of the mycobacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis that causes TB, with the identification made as early as 3 days. Cultures will also be done to determine the most effective antibiotic. These tests also monitor how well you are responding to treatment, and to determine the need for a more effective antibiotic.
