Triglycerides are fats released by the liver and are used by the body for energy. Triglycerides are transported through the blood by LDLs (low-density lipoproteins) and VLDL (very low-density lipoproteins). Triglycerides will deposit into fatty tissues when blood levels are very high. Triglycerides are usually measured as part of the Lipid Profile, and levels are used to determine your risk for the future development of blood vessel and heart disease.

Low blood levels are seen in people with an over-active thyroid gland, poor nutrition, or decreased absorption of nutrients within the digestive tract. High blood levels are seen in people with high blood pressure, high fat (lipid) blood levels, a diet high in carbohydrates, an under-active thyroid gland, diabetes that is poorly controlled, kidney disease, cirrhosis due to alcohol abuse, or during normal pregnancy. There are many medications that can affect triglyceride blood levels.
