(Stool C & S)
- Stool for O & P (Ova and Parasites)
There are many types of bacteria found in the bowel that are actually beneficial and their normal levels keep disease-causing bacteria levels under control. When the beneficial bacteria are killed off due to chemotherapy, antibiotic treatment, or a poorly functioning immune system, the bad bacteria can overtake the digestive system resulting in severe diarrhea, gas, and pain. Diarrhea can also be due to pathogenic bacteria acquired from contaminated food, virus infections, or parasites. Hookworm (Ascaris), protozoa (Giardia), or tapeworm (Strongyloides) are the most common parasites identified. Test results can take up to six weeks to return from the lab.
