Ovarian Cancer Genetic Testing

Alternate Names

  • Breast and Ovarian Cancer Genetic Testing

Some types of breast cancer are due to the presence of an inherited BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutation. This gene mutation increases the risk of developing breast cancer, but is not an indication of the presence of cancer. The BRCA1 gene mutation also indicates an increased risk of developing ovarian cancer, and men with the BRCA2 gene mutation have an increased risk for the development of breast, colon, and prostate cancer. BRCA1 and BRCA2 are dominant genes; you would only need to inherit the mutated gene from one parent to have an increased risk for cancer.
