Human Papillomavirus Test
- HPV DNA Testing
HPV is a sexually-transmitted disease caused by a virus, with more than 100 strains of the virus identified. An HPV test is done when a PAP Test is abnormal. HPV can cause the development of genital warts, and may lead to the development of cervical cancer. The virus is transmitted by skin contact; there are usually no symptoms of infection, and the virus is spread unknowingly. Thirteen of the identified strains do not develop any signs or symptoms of infection, but are associated with an increased risk for cervical cancer development. It can take up to fifteen years to develop cervical cancer following infection with HPV.
