Cytokines are proteins made by cells necessary for normal immune response regulation. Cytokine levels are used to diagnose illness or the autoimmune diseases RA (rheumatoid arthritis) or SLE (systemic lupus erythmatosis); to follow the progression of AIDS; as tumor markers for certain cancers; to determine the best treatment, and to monitor how well you are responding to treatment. Cytokines are also used as a treatment to decrease inflammation in certain diseases, as a treatment for certain cancers, and to increase the amount of blood cells that are produced in the bone marrow.
