Abnormal changes to chromosomes cause inherited gene mutations, which may lead to developmental conditions and diseases that cause growth or mental retardation. Developmental diseases caused by genetic abnormalities are Down syndrome, Turner's syndrome (which causes delayed puberty), or Klinefelter's syndrome (testicular failure caused by the presence of an additional X chromosome). Other inherited genetic diseases are Tay-Sachs disease and sickle cell anemia; while numerous miscarriages or cancers can also be caused by genetic abnormalities.
