- LEEP Procedure
- Cone Biopsy
If your PAP smear comes back as abnormal, a cervical biopsy will be done. A punch biopsy takes a small piece of tissue from the surface of the cervix; an endocervical biopsy removes tissue from within the cervix; a loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) uses an electrified metal loop to remove abnormal tissue either on the surface of the cervix or within the cervix. A piece of tissue shaped like a cone is taken from the cervix (cone biopsy); which is done in an operating room in the hospital; all of the other biopsies can be done in your doctor's office.
Tissue samples are then examined with a microscope to identify any cell abnormalities. Cervical biopsy procedures can also be used to assess the extent of abnormal cells or to remove abnormal cells as a treatment for cervical cancer.
