Tissue will be taken from a breast tumor removed during surgery and microscopically examined to determine your cancer recurrence risk. Some breast cancer tumors can be completely removed and have no lymph node involvement but the cancer will still recur. New methods of identifying risk for recurrence are being developed, including microscopic examination of specific breast cancer tumor markers that are present on tissue cells. Each component that is identified will help your doctor determine the aggressiveness of the cancer, and assists in determining the treatment that is most appropriate for you.

Test results take about one week to return from the lab.
