Antiglomerular Basement Membrane Antibodies
(AGBM)

Alternate Names

  • Anti-GBM Antibody
  • Glomerular Basement Antibody
  • Goodpasture's Antibody

Autoimmune diseases cause the body to attack itself, which leads to inflammation and results in damage to muscles, tissues, and organs. The body produces antibodies specific to each autoimmune disease; the antibody levels measured in your blood are then used by your doctor to diagnose the disease that is causing your symptoms. AGBM is a blood test that is mainly used to diagnose Goodpasture's syndrome, an autoimmune disease that causes damage to the kidneys, and to monitor your response to treatment. The blood test is more accurate than tissue biopsies, and may also be used to diagnose kidney damage due to SLE (systemic lupus erythmatosis).
